Fans of 6ix9ine were in for a surprise as the rapper temporarily shifted away from rap to release his third studio album, Leyenda Viva. This album is entirely Spanish and falls under the reggaeton genre, boasting 11 tracks with minimal collaborations. The Latin Grammy-winning artist Lenier features on seven tracks, while the title “Living Legend” translates to Leyenda Viva. One of the tracks, “Y Ahora,” was previously released as a single and drew inspiration from regional Mexican music, featuring a collaboration with the Mexican band Guapo Firme.
Leyenda Viva is 6ix9ine’s first full studio album in three years, following his sophomore release, TattleTales, in 2020. The latter peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, selling 53,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. However, Billboard’s rules have since changed, which has prompted 6ix9ine to express grievances against the publication. He criticized the law that excludes merch bundles from counting towards chart placements, claiming it was implemented after he sold over three million dollars worth of merchandise for his single “Gooba.”
Besides releasing a full album, 6ix9ine also dropped a video for his new single, “Pa Ti,” featuring the female artist Yailin la Mas Viral. The video features the two performances mostly in a tropical setting before a lavish-looking house. Although this new direction has been in the works for a while, many have criticized the rapper, accusing him of being a culture vulture who does rap when it suits him and then moves on to something else. However, 6ix9ine had a solid response to the criticism, as always.
