GRIP, an Atlanta-based rapper, has developed a unique style that prioritizes intricate lyricism over trap music trends. He seamlessly shifts between various flows on musically rich instrumentals, delivering a dense storytelling and conceptual flair that characterized his initial two commercial mixtapes – Porch (2017) and Snubnose (2019). These achievements have earned him a contract with Eminem’s Shady Records, where he released his debut album, I Died for This!? (2021).
GRIP was born Kyle Clow and started rapping during high school in his native Decatur, influenced by fellow Georgians T.I. and André 3000, along with Nas and Mobb Deep. He first broke out with the single “These Eyes” in 2016, a passionately delivered song breaking down everyday hardships and struggles. The next year, the track was included on his commercial debut tape, Porch. GRIP released several singles throughout 2018 and 2019, returning with the conceptual mixtape Snubnose in late 2019. In addition to the 13-track project following themes of systematic oppression of the Black community, he produced powerful visual counterparts that mirrored the content of the music.
GRIP faced uncertainty and setbacks, including the cancellation of a major tour with Brent Faiyaz due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This left him at a crossroads and contemplating leaving the music industry altogether. However, Eminem, a fan of his work, offered GRIP a contract with Shady Records. In August 2021, GRIP released his debut album; I Died for This!?, which featured collaborations with Eminem and Royce da 5’9″, as well as other talented artists such as Big Rube, Dead Cassettes, and Wiley from Atlanta.
