Scottish alternative rock band, Teenage Fanclub, has announced the release of their latest album, Nothing Lasts Forever, as a follow-up to their 2021 album, Endless Arcade. The album will be available on September 22 through Merge in the United States and PeMa, the band’s label, in the United Kingdom and Europe. The video for the album’s opening track, “Foreign Land,” has been released for fans to check out.
Raymond McGinley, one of the songwriters, said in a statement that the band does not discuss their plans before making a record. They only plan the logistics of where and when they will record. According to McGinley, the album’s reflective theme was accidental. The band realized that the album had an unintentional melancholic feel after they had already written half of the songs.
Norman Blake, another songwriter in the band, added that the songs on Nothing Lasts Forever are personal and reflective of the band members’ experiences. The lyrics express thoughts about mortality, the idea of light, and the acceptance of life’s experiences. Blake also mentioned that the lyrics on the previous album, Endless Arcade, were influenced by his divorce, while the new songs reflect how he and the band are feeling now. Blake stated that the new songs are fairly optimistic and convey an acceptance of the situation.
The band members’ inspiration for their lyrics come from their ordinary lives. They believe that there is a lot to write about in the mundane. They are not extraordinary people, and like everyone else, they are getting older. According to Blake, their music speaks to lived experience, much like the stories of Raymond Carver, who is one of his favorite authors.
Scottish alternative rock band Teenage Fanclub formed in Glasgow in 1989. The group consisted of Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love, who shared lead vocals and songwriting duties until Love left in 2018.
