Alestorm is a Scottish metal band that was formed in Perth, Scotland in 2004. The band is known for its pirate theme and has often been referred to as a “pirate metal” band by both critics and fans alike.
The members of the band include lead vocalist and keytarist Christopher Bowes, bassist Gareth Murdock, drummer Peter Alcorn, keyboardist and harsh vocalist Elliot Vernon, and guitarist Máté “Bobo” Bodor.
While Alestorm’s music is primarily folk and power metal, the band has experimented with various other genres over the years. They have even given themselves the humorous descriptor of “True Scottish Pirate Metal,” poking fun at a similar phrase used in the black metal scene.
The band initially formed under the name Battleheart, and after releasing two EPs, they were signed to Napalm Records in 2007. However, the label requested that they change their name, which the band was happy to do as they were not fond of the name themselves. They ultimately chose the name Alestorm, which they felt was a better fit for their pirate-themed music.
Alestorm has released seven studio albums, including their debut album “Captain Morgan’s Revenge” in 2008, “Black Sails at Midnight” in 2009, “Back Through Time” in 2011, “Sunset on the Golden Age” in 2014, “No Grave But the Sea” in 2017, “Curse of the Crystal Coconut” in 2020, and their most recent album, “Seventh Rum of a Seventh Rum,” which was released in 2022. The band has also released one live album and five EPs.
Additionally, Christopher Bowes, the band’s lead vocalist, provides the announcer voice for the Pirate team in the video game “Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II.”
