Fontaines D.C. has signed with XL for a new album titled Romance, which is scheduled for release on August 23. The announcement coincides with the release of a new single, “Starburster.” The band also released a video for the single, directed by Aube Perrie, featuring a wounded Grian Chatten navigating his daily life while wearing a prosthetic mask.
This album marks the band’s first collaboration with producer James Ford, known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Blur. In a press release, guitarist Conor Deegan described the album’s title, stating, “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as Dogrel. The second album is about that detachment, and the third is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”
Chatten cited the romantic undertones of the dystopian anime Akira as an inspiration, mentioning, “I’m fascinated by that—falling in love at the end of the world. The album is about protecting that tiny flame. The bigger Armageddon looms, the more precious it becomes.” Other influences noted in the press release include Shygirl, Sega Bodega, A$AP Ferg, and the Prodigy.
Romance follows their 2022 release Skinty Fia. Chatten wrote “Starbuster” about a panic attack he had in St. Pancras train station in London, according to a press release.

About Artist:
Irish post-punk group Fontaines D.C. was founded in Dublin in 2017. Grian Chatten on vocals, Carlos O’Connell on guitar, Conor Curley on guitar, Conor Deegan III on bass, and Tom Coll on drums make up the band.
The band members became friends over their shared love of poetry while attending music college. Before joining Partisan Records in 2018, the band started releasing songs on their own and giving frequent live performances. The band’s debut album, Dogrel, was widely praised by critics when it was released on April 12, 2019. It was nominated for a Mercury Prize and a Choice Music Prize, and it was named Album of the Year on the website of record retailer Rough Trade. Presenters on BBC Radio 6 Music also voted it Album of the Year.
