Miami Gardens, also known as “Murda Gardens” by locals, is an unlikely birthplace for a rapper who embraces vampires and horror movie themes. PlayThatBoiZay, also known as Zay, has managed to incorporate this unique aesthetic into his artistry.
Zay refers to his fans and supporters as VIPs, which stands for “vampires impersonating people.” This is unusual considering Miami’s sunny climate, which would theoretically kill any vampires, but Zay doesn’t seem bothered by this.
Speaking from his hotel room in Denver, Zay is currently on tour with Denzel Curry as part of the Grey Day Tour. Denzel has had a significant impact on Zay’s career, inspiring him to pursue music after receiving encouragement to do so.
Zay released music starting in 2018, but it was his 2019 project “Nocturnal” and his feature on Denzel’s track “P.A.T.” from the album “Zuu” that brought him into the spotlight as one of South Florida’s upcoming rappers.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Zay released the “Girls Love Vampires” EP in December 2020 and began working on his debut album, “VIP.” The inspiration for the album stemmed from a painful heartbreak, and Zay worked with Kwes Darko to create a tracklist that reflected his emotions.
“VIP” is set to be released on Friday, August 23, and has a dark, eerie, and almost creepy atmosphere. The album features Zay and collaborators such as Denzel, JPEGMafia, and Kenny Mason, with intense and aggressive performances throughout.
Zay‘s rapid-fire, high-energy flows have helped him stand out in the competitive hip-hop scene, and support from artists like Denzel has expanded his fan base. Even A$AP Rocky became a fan, and he is featured on the track “Hoodlumz.”
The song, which is a quick two minutes and nine seconds, showcases Zay, Denzel, and Rocky trading verses over a distorted, Southern hip-hop-inspired beat. It has become a favorite among fans, who are eager for longer verses from the trio.
