Mark Jacob Lenderman (born 1999), also known as Jake Lenderman and MJ Lenderman, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has released three solo albums and also plays with the alternative rock band Wednesday. Additionally, he has played drums for Indigo De Souza. Lenderman’s style has been described as alt-country, classic rock, and indie rock music.
Lenderman was born in Asheville, North Carolina. His great-grandfather was saxophonist Charlie Ventura. He was raised Catholic and was an altar boy. He played basketball and obsessively watched tapes of Michael Jordan. He grew up listening to Mark Linkous and Jason Molina. In his junior and senior year of high school, he began posting his music to Bandcamp. Lenderman studied at UNC Asheville for three semesters.
The cult of personality around MJ Lenderman centers on his sly humor and unique sports references. His fourth album, “Manning Fireworks,” diverges from his previous work. It focuses on the aftermath of impulsive actions, with the characters drowning in debt after buying a boat.
The album is filled with caricatures that toe the line between humor and shame. Despite the self-destructive nature of the characters, the album maintains an insistent, hopeful tone. Lenderman’s lyrics reflect both the pitiful and reflective sides of our worst selves, making it easy to root for them.
Recorded in spurts while touring, “Manning Fireworks” is an airier, cleaner album compared to Lenderman‘s previous work, focusing on his essential songwriting and voice. Lenderman’s compassionate storytelling and subtle humor shine throughout the album, confirming his status as a premier storyteller.
In the end, “Manning Fireworks” defies simplification and firmly establishes Lenderman as a rising indie star.
