Mustafa Ahmed, born on 28 July 1996 and known as Mustafa, is a Sudanese-Canadian poet, singer, songwriter, and filmmaker from Toronto. He released his debut studio album, “When Smoke Rises,” in May 2021. Mustafa grew up in Regent Park, one of Toronto’s oldest housing projects, where gun violence and street gangs were part of his childhood. He attended Regent Park Duke of York Public School.

In the seventh grade, Mustafa performed an original piece titled “A Single Rose” at Nelson Mandela Park Public School, which received praise at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2009.

Mustafa was first inspired to write poetry by his older sister, who taught him the healing effects of poetry at a young age.

As a songwriter, Mustafa has co-written several popular singles, often collaborating closely with Toronto producer Frank Dukes. In 2016, he began working with Dukes and co-wrote the song “Attention” by The Weeknd on the album “Starboy,” and also provided some background vocals. The following year, he co-wrote two tracks on Camila Cabello’s debut album “Camila,” including “All These Years” and the single “She Loves Control.”

Mustafa has announced his new debut studio album, “Dunya,” which is set to be released on September 27 via Jagjaguwar. Along with this announcement, he has shared the music video for his new song “SNL,” directed by Mustafa himself.

“SNL” was co-produced by Rodaidh McDonald, Simon Hessman, and the National’s Aaron Dessner. McDonald and Hessman also worked on three previously shared Dunya tracks, “Imaan,” “Name of God,” and “Gaza Is Calling.” Other collaborators on the new album include JID, Rosalía, Clairo, Nicolás Jaar, Daniel Caesar, and Ramy Youssef.
