The Cure has announced their first new song in 16 years, titled “Alone,” which is set to be released on Thursday. A snippet of the song was shared on the band’s social media, revealing a symphonic ballad with heavy drums and lurching electric guitar, featuring frontman Robert Smith singing: “This is the end of every song that we sing / the fire burned out to ash, the stars grow dim with tears.”

The song will premiere on Mary Anne Hobbs’s BBC Radio 6 Music show at noon in the UK. This marks the end of a long-awaited return for the band, which they have been teasing for several years.

The band’s most recent new music was in 2008 with “4:13 Dream,” described by the Guardian at the time as “admirably taut and vibrant, though nothing here scales classic heights.” Smith had announced a sister record, “4:14 Scream,” which was supposed to be released in 2014 but was later scrapped. In a 2018 interview with the Guardian, Smith mentioned struggling to write new songs and expressed his desire to return to the studio.

In 2019, the band had productive recording sessions, resulting in a significant amount of music. Smith mentioned recording 19 songs, some of which were 10 to 12 minutes long, with a dark and intense vibe. In 2022, Smith announced the intended title of the album, “Songs of a Lost World.”

Although the album hasn’t been officially announced, it seems likely that “Alone” will be included. Mysterious postcards and a poster with the words “Songs of a Lost World” and a date of 1 November 2024 in Roman numerals have hinted at a potential release date.

With a rich discography and a dedicated fan base, the Cure has continued to tour regularly and maintain a strong presence in the music industry. However, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma, but he remains optimistic about his prognosis.
