Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a Canadian post-rock band that started in Montreal, Quebec in 1994. The group releases music through Constellation, an independent record label also based in Montreal. Their debut album F♯ A♯ ∞ was released in 1997, and they toured regularly from 1998 to 2003. Their second album, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000), received critical acclaim and has been named one of the best albums of the decade. After releasing Yanqui U.X.O. in 2002, the band went on hiatus in 2003.
Rumors of the band breaking up circulated, but they reformed in 2010. Their first post-reunion album, Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! (2012), won the 2013 Polaris Music Prize. This was followed by Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress (2015), Luciferian Towers (2017), G_d’s Pee at State’s End! (2021), and No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead (2024). The band recently announced their eighth studio album, NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD, scheduled for release on October 4th via Constellation. The new record addresses the ongoing conflict in Palestine, with all six songs having urgent titles related to the album’s theme. The closing track, “GREY RUBBLE – GREEN SHOOTS,” is already available for streaming, and pre-orders for the album are ongoing.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor will kick off their 2024 tour with a European leg in September, followed by a North American leg in November. They have also confirmed an additional North American tour in spring 2025 to coincide with the album announcement.
