Jason Bradley DeFord, born on December 4, 1984, is an American singer, rapper, and songwriter known professionally as Jelly Roll. He hails from Antioch, Tennessee, and began his career in 2003. He gained mainstream recognition after the release of his singles “Son of a Sinner” and “Need a Favor” in 2022. “Son of a Sinner” earned three CMT Music Awards in 2023. In the same year, he received the New Artist award at the CMA Awards and was nominated for Best New Artist at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.
Jelly Roll has announced his upcoming 10th studio album, “Beautifully Broken,” which will be released on October 11. The album, named after his upcoming headlining tour, will feature the singles “I Am Not Okay,” “Liar,” and the newly released “Get By.” ESPN has selected “Get By” as the anthem for the 2024 College Football Season. Notably, all net profits from pre-orders of the album on his website will be donated to various organizations supporting individuals struggling with mental health and addiction.
In an interview with the New York Times Magazine, Jelly Roll expressed his intention to create purposeful songs for the album, stating, “I’m looking for songs that have purpose. When I go to put out a song under the name Jelly Roll, I think to myself, ‘Why?’ Because for the first time in my life, it has nothing to do with a financial decision. I’m well past putting out anything for money. So, now, it really is a ‘why.’ Songs like ‘Winning Streak,’ that’s a why.”
Jelly Roll has been enjoying success since the release of his debut country album, “Whitsitt Chapel,” in June 2023. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, marking his highest-charting record to date. Hits from the album include “Need a Favor” and “Save Me” with Lainey Wilson. His achievements include winning new artist of the year at the CMA Awards and securing victories in his three nominated categories at the CMT Music Awards.
Following this, Jelly Roll will commence his extensive nationwide “Beautifully Broken” tour at Salt Lake City’s Delta Center on August 27, with plans to tour the country before concluding at Jacksonville, Florida’s Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena on November 23.
