Kids In Glass Houses have entered into a fresh chapter in their musical journey after embracing their past. After splitting in 2014, the Cardiff-based band reunited last year to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their debut album, “Smart Casual,” at the Slam Dunk Festival. This experience made the five-member group contemplate what kind of new music they would create while embracing their maturity. The resulting album, “Pink Flamingo,” suggests they’ve swapped blazers and Hush Puppies for Hawaiian shirts and loafers.
While this new effort may not be what one would expect from a band named after a Glassjaw song, it aligns more closely with the style of Daryl Palumbo’s other project, Head Automatica. The band has skillfully tweaked their earlier sound, bringing the ’80s influences more prominently to the forefront. The outcome is a seamless sonic transition, featuring 11 tracks that could easily fit into their setlist without any inconsistencies. They also tap into the current nostalgia trend, much like fellow artists such as The 1975 (check out “Have A Good Time” for proof).
For instance, it’s impossible to listen to “Strawberry Sky” without picturing the vibrant hues of a tropical sunset, the red light shimmering on the water, or the sudden craving for a fruity drink adorned with a tiny umbrella—preferably mixed with a 62-year-old Tom Cruise, rather than the one from the 1988 film *Cocktail*. Meanwhile, “A Ghost to Live With,” featuring a plucked acoustic guitar and heartfelt vocals, brings to mind John Mayer. Aled Phillips’ lyrics reflect a greater depth gained with time, revealing a willingness to express more—much of it not very positive. (“We’re picking up the pieces / The black box still remains.”)
