Alena Spanger‘s “Fire Escape” Album Download Leak MP3 ZIP Files

Alena Spanger has been creating music for over a decade, starting as the lead vocalist of the indie band Tiny Hazard.

Tiny Hazard’s music was known for its mix of delicate melodies and dissonant sounds. However, Alena’s current work is more refined and subtle. Her debut album, Fire Escape, is set to release under her own name on March 22, and her music is unpredictable, with vocal flourishes, melodic feints, and unlikely arrangements that reward repeated listening.

The first two singles from Fire Escape showcase Alena’s playful but potent voice. Her voice is capable of pushing to its limits and pulling back to a whisper. On “Agios,” her voice becomes a commentary on the song’s argument, while on “Difficult People,” she trapezes up and down her range, creating a ballad-like effect. Her sound has been compared to Björk and Joanna Newsom, but her voice and arrangements are tangibly off this world, less ethereal.

Alena’s latest single, “All That I Wanted,” is a weirder song than the previous two, with drum machines tripping over handclaps and synth bursts. Her chorus – “All that I wanted was to dance with you” – initially sounds joyful, but it’s just a thin veil for her frustration. She sings and talks over layers of herself, “People think they know / But you’re just a mosquito / Draining me out / And I’m gonna fucking burst.” Her voice leading up to that moment mimics a mosquito at close range, murmuring and breathing at the top of her register.

She explains that the song was inspired by Joan Armatrading’s “Love and Affection,” where the lyric “but with a lover, I can really move… I can really dance” stuck with her when she was feeling claustrophobic in a relationship. It’s about the craving for an experience that is uninhibited by words or a compulsion to name and analyze.

Fire Escape was recorded over five years and features production from Tiny Hazard’s Ryan Weiner, Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna and Carlos Truly), and Winston Cook-Wilson (Office Culture). Julian Cubillos, teasea, Carmen Quill, Kalia Vandever, and Kitba (Rebecca El-Saleh) also contribute.

Alena’s music reflects all of that, bursting out in different directions and changing course from track to track. However, even across these first three songs, Alena sounds instinctive and unrestrained, communicating raw emotions in unexpected ways. If she can do all of that across nine minutes of music, imagine what she’ll do with a full album.
