Two years ago, Chow Lee and Cash Cobain significantly impacted New York hip-hop. Their collaborative mixtape 2 SLIZZY 2 SEXY gained popularity that summer, presenting a boldly raunchy take on the sample drill beats favored by New Yorkers like Shawny Binladen and Kay Flock.

“At first, they were not supporting us,” Chow Lee tells me during a video call in late July. “Now, everybody wants to make sexy drill.”

This includes artists like Bktherula, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, NAV, Jay Critch, and Drake who have collaborated with Cash Cobain. Additionally, there are numerous artists putting their own spin on the sound, from R2R Moe and Kelz to Vontee the Singer and Baby Osama. The duo’s suggestive banter led a different direction for their hometown’s prevalent sound, free from violent language and its associated oversight.

Undeterred by the saturation, the pioneers have continued to evolve in the past two years. Cash has expanded his production, incorporating moody, atmospheric elements and fusing drill patterns with unconventional melodies and subdued drums, while Chow has honed his skills as a rapper, refining his tones and rhythms. His latest album, Sex Drive, is an engaging and provocative listen. Although his interest rarely wanes, Lee playfully broadens his lyrical themes, balancing suggestive content with romantic gestures and carefree dancefloor anthems.

For instance, in the February single “ms. beautiful V,” he opens with, “28 seconds ago I was doing that thing that you like / I just cut my connections off,” portraying his preferred post-coital activity as a late-night recording session and declaring on IG Create Mode, “LEAVE ME ALONE I GOT A GIRL.” Similarly, in last summer’s “jatty,” Lee casually gives dance instructions over a catchy excerpt of Toni Braxton: “Two steps to the right step back / Two steps to the left step back / Turn around, shake your ass then clap.” These songs are not puritanical by any means, but they exude a risqué rather than obscene vibe, striking a balance between Cash Cobain’s bold compositions and the starry-eyed ballads of sexy drill’s rising star, Wolfacejoeyy.

Sex Drive largely follows a similar trajectory, although Chow still prefers to rap about what he calls “derogatory stuff.” He starts off by self-deprecatingly saying, “I’m not really lyrical / I’m just expressing myself on the beat and it works.” Even his most provocative ideas — like engaging in group activities with close friends, unabashed infidelity, and intimate moments in a church — are conveyed with a playful self-awareness and a keen attention to detail. He acknowledges his shortcomings as a partner in “GMT” (“I like bad bitches that are promiscuous, that’s how I lost my partner”) and shares advice for long-distance relationships in “advance w her!” (“Me and my partner are on tour at the same time, used my charm to win her over.”)

It’s not just his lyrical skills that have improved: Sex Drive finds Chow firmly in his element, exploring intricate rhythms across a wide range of instrumentals. “People don’t even know what I’m capable of yet,” Chow Stated. “They only know me for sexy drill. That’s why I tried to switch it up, though not too much.”

Whether it’s the PoWRTrav soul chop on “settings!” or the dreamy ambience of “Swag it,” Lee’s dynamic flow never falters, resulting in some of his most compelling songs to date. The euphoric birdcall synths break through the haze of “GMT;” when a resonant 808 kicks in, Chow effortlessly navigates its beats, smirking, “You’ve got something valuable, you could sell it / I’m not really telling you to sell it, but if you do, make sure they transfer you the money.”

The later verses on the album by Flo Milli and Anycia are standout moments for everyone involved: the female perspective keeps Sex Drive feeling authentic rather than misogynistic, and the confrontational exchange in “get back!” is effortlessly seductive. Elsewhere, “bangbang!” features a beat reminiscent of MIKE, driven by evocative chords and intricate drums. And when Cash Cobain and Bay Swag join forces on “act bad twin!,” the trio’s delivery becomes almost transcendent as they rap about lovers over a hazy sample from PARTYNEXTDOOR.
