“The Great Impersonator” is Halsey’s fifth album, released on October 25, 2024. It follows 2021’s “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” and is Halsey’s first record with Columbia Records after they depart from Capitol Records, which was reported in mid-April 2023.
On April 29, Halsey confirmed they were working on new music by posting a photo on their Instagram story, stating, “and I didn’t even have to ask permission.” On June 14, 2023, it was announced that Halsey had officially signed with Columbia Records. The album title was revealed on August 27, alongside an album trailer. The album artwork and release date were announced on social media on September 4, and the tracklist was unveiled on September 25, exactly one month before the album’s release.
To begin teasing the record, Halsey launched a website titled FOR MY LAST TRICK to promote the album on January 27, 2024, after a show in Mumbai, India. In a Tumblr post, Halsey confirmed they had started working on new music: “I want you to know that I am hard at work… I am working on some of my favorite stuff I’ve ever conjured… This feels like my debut all over again, in some ways.” On July 18, just over a week before the release of the second single, Halsey answered questions on X, revealing that the album’s genre is “all over the place” and mentioning that they “wrote a lot about what [they were] going through.”
Halsey kicked off the singles rollout with “The End,” an acoustic ballad about their struggles with mental and physical health while also falling in love. On July 26, their cover of Britney Spears’ 2000 song “Lucky” was released as the second single. The third single, “Lonely is the Muse,” came out on August 15. “Ego” was released on September 6 after its debut in London, and “I Never Loved You” was released fifteen days before the album’s release.
For the standard cover of “The Great Impersonator”, a black-and-white collage of Halsey’s face looking away, with their cheeks painted orange, takes center stage. A star sticker appears in the upper left corner, accompanied by the following description:
“Step right up, ladies and gentlemen! Behold the marvel of a century! Witness the uncanny ability of a woman who can become anyone and anything your heart desires—friend, lover, foe. She transforms before your very eyes, her voice and visage a reflection of your deepest dreams and darkest fears. But beware, for she is not just a master of disguise but a spirit of transformation, slipping between the cracks of reality. One moment a beloved friend, the next a shadowy nightmare. She is the queen of the uncanny, the mistress of metamorphosis. Beware of the great impersonator!”
The cover’s theme, title, and description suggest it is stylized like a vintage circus poster, with Halsey playing the role of the impersonator, someone who mimics the actions of others. The cover was unveiled on Halsey’s social media on September 4, 2024, after the singer sent fans on a scavenger hunt to find the cover and its variants hidden in time capsules around the world. This game was announced the previous day when Halsey posted a video titled “For My Next Trick,” explaining how the album cover would be revealed:
“My next trick is not mine at all. It’s yours. Tomorrow, you will reveal the album cover for *The Great Impersonator* along with four variants. I have hidden five time capsules from five different decades at special locations in the following cities: London, New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Sydney. I will reveal clues on my socials along the way. You must work together, as the next city’s clues will not be revealed until the previous city is found. Go to TheGreatImpersonator.com to watch and follow along. Don’t blink… Or you’ll miss it.”
The first time capsule containing the standard cover was located in London, inside the International Magic Shop. Fans found it less than ten minutes after the first clue was revealed by Halsey.
