Bastille, the celebrated English indie pop band that began in 2010 as the brainchild of lead vocalist Dan Smith, has consistently pushed the boundaries of the genre. Initially a solo project, Bastille soon expanded to include keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist and guitarist Will Farquarson, and drummer Chris “Woody” Wood. Their journey skyrocketed after signing with Virgin Records and releasing their debut album Bad Blood in 2013. With hit singles like “Pompeii” charting across the UK and beyond, the band established a solid fanbase that has only grown with each album release—Wild World in 2016, Doom Days in 2019, and Give Me the Future in 2022.

Known for blending indie-pop with darker, complex themes, Bastille has continuously redefined what their genre could be. With their ReOrchestrated shows, for instance, they reimagined their hits with orchestras and choirs, elevating their live performances. Now, the band ventures into new territory once more, offering Bastille Presents, an immersive, fourteen-track experience. Unlike previous records, & (Ampersand) leans heavily into acoustic intimacy and storytelling, stepping away from polished pop production to embrace softer, stripped-back arrangements.

Thematically ambitious yet musically understated, & (Ampersand) captures a series of “story songs” told from the perspectives of mythological and cultural figures, creating an atmosphere that’s introspective and grounded. Tracks like “The Soprano & Midnight Wonderings” feature stunning vocal work by collaborator Bim, whose voice resonates with an emotional depth that aligns perfectly with the album’s reflective tone. This project also showcases an array of textures—strings, gang vocals, and even lyrics sung in French—that amplify the immersive, character-driven experience Bastille sought to create.

Opening with “Intros & Narrators,” the album sets the stage for a unique storytelling journey through the lens of Smith’s poetic musings. These tracks aren’t historical lectures but rather imaginative takes on universal stories. For long-time fans, & (Ampersand) offers a refreshing, innovative side of Bastille, and for new listeners, it’s a captivating entry into their world of sonic exploration and lyrical depth.
