Bella Shmurda is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who rose to fame in 2019 with the release of his hit single “Vision 2020”. He is the youngest of 10 children and hails from a polygamous family in Ikorodu. His interest in music started when he was in elementary school and was part of a band and cultural dance troupe. He continued his education in Badagry and later earned a bachelor’s degree in History and International Relations from Lagos State University.
Bella Shmurda gained widespread attention after Nigerian rapper Olamide remixed his debut single “Vision 2020”. He also released his first EP, “High Tension”, in January 2020, which showcased his talent in afrobeats music. In the same year, he collaborated with rapper Zlatan on the song “Cash App” and was nominated for several awards, including the Next Rated Award at The Headies 2020.
In 2021, Bella Shmurda won two awards at the Global Music Awards Africa and was inducted into the YouTube Foundry Programme, which aims to support artist development and promote musical heritage. He also appeared on the BBC’s “This is Africa” interview series and was nominated for the “Next Rated” award at the Headies Awards.
Bella Shmurda’s single “Philo”, which featured Omah Lay, was released off his debut album “Hypertension” in October 2022. The song has received global attention, and South African rapper Nasty C even made a remix of it. Bella Shmurda also collaborated with Tiwa Savage on a single titled “NSV” in May 2023, produced by Krizbeatz.
In November 2021, Bella Shmurda made his debut performance at The O2 Arena in the United Kingdom as a guest performer at Wizkid’s “Made in Lagos” concert. And in March 2023, he released his first single of the year, “Ara (Gen Gen Tin)”, after his album project rollout.
