The singer-songwriter BoyWithUke, also known as Charley Yang, has released a new single titled “Gaslight” from his upcoming album, Burnout. The album, scheduled for release on November 15th, 2024, via AWAL Recordings, is available for pre-order on BoyWithUke’s website.
In “Gaslight,” BoyWithUke breaks the standard structure of pop/rock writing, incorporating a thrashed guitar explosion and faux choruses to depict a self-sabotaging breakup spiral. The music video of “Gaslight” features BoyWithUke’s doppelganger, the mysterious “Tobi,” haunting BoyWithUke as he tries to move on from the past.
BoyWithUke shared that “Gaslight” was a fun song to make and portrays the complexities of failed relationships and the difficulty in determining who is at fault. To reinforce this idea, he teased a plot twist at the song’s end. Additionally, BoyWithUke announced that Burnout will be his final album under the moniker and will showcase his true self after taking off the mask that turned him into an internet sensation. The album, filled with symbolism for embracing change, facing fears, and defying metaphorical boxes, encompasses a mix of doom rock, grunge, r&b, hip-hop, and singer-songwriter genres.
Since his breakout with Minute Long Songs on TikTok in 2020, BoyWithUke has achieved nearly 1.5 billion streams and received platinum records for singles like “Toxic,” “Two Moons,” “IDGAF (with blackbear),” and “Understand.” His success has led to sold-out headline shows internationally and recognition from Rolling Stone, Billboard, and other publications.
The album title, Burnout, was inspired by a passage about burnout as a metaphor for using up a limited quantity of something too quickly. BoyWithUke expressed that his fast-paced lifestyle led to feelings of exhaustion and identity issues. He has sought to strike a better balance between work and personal life.
Charley Yang has undergone significant personal and professional changes while being BoyWithUke, transitioning from a long-term relationship to leaving a major label deal. His music now incorporates more electronic elements and unconventional song structures, reflecting his personal growth and experiences.
