Cecile Believe is preparing to release her EP, “Tender the Spark,” which reflects her strong determination. She explains that the title’s inspiration came from mishearing the phrase “tinder the spark,” which resonated with her. The phrase represents something soft yet hard—protecting a spark while acknowledging the potential of getting hurt. She also explores the various meanings of the word “tender,” finding connections to formalization, a type of boat, and the act of tenderizing meat.

Believe’s interest in the evolution of meaning and her penchant for embracing contradiction are evident in her work, including “Tender the Spark.” The EP’s lead single, “Blink Twice,” showcases her taking on the persona of a nocturnal siren set to captivating synths and an energetic beat. In contrast, her latest single, “Ponytail,” is an ebullient homage to the excitement of first love, accompanied by a self-directed video depicting Believe cruising through the streets of Los Angeles. Believe discusses her affinity for presenting a structure and then playing with it, seeking to explore what lies behind the facade in both life and music.
