The last time we heard from the power-pop duo Cowboy Boy was in 2021. They were split between Boston and Los Angeles and were about to release their double EP, “Good Girl,” which included almost all of their recorded songs at that time. Since then, the pair have reunited in Los Angeles, but the Boston influence is still strong, as seen in “Great Scott,” the lead single from their new album, “Lipstick On A Pig.”
The song is named after the now-closed Allston venue, Great Scott, which was recently turned into a Taco Bell. “Somebody said on the internet, ‘You’ll never meet your soulmate at Great Scott,’ and it makes me laugh because I think it’s true in every single other case but ours,” sings the band’s Olivia Maria in the opening lines.
This song was inspired by a tweet that said something like, “You’re never going to meet your soulmate at Great Scott,” referring to the iconic venue in Allston, MA, which sadly closed during the pandemic. Ironically, I really did meet my soulmate on the patio of that venue, and this song is about them. It’s a straightforward love song, honest, full of nostalgia and vulnerability, and I think the lush, cinematic nature of the instrumentation really reflects that. This song is like a magic spell, bringing to life my belief in finding my true love in every lifetime.
