On August 2, country newcomer Ella Langley released her debut album, “Hungover.” The album features a mix of country sub-genres, including pop-country, acoustic singer-songwriter, old-school jukebox folk, and country rock, catering to her fans’ expectations.

Langley co-wrote all 14 tracks on the album, which are filled with traditional country themes such as smoking, drinking, love in bars, regret, heartbreak, and references to cowboys. However, a few songs stand out due to their clever writing and depth.

The first eight songs on “Hungover” follow the typical country music themes. The title track compares dating to feeling hungover the next morning. Other tracks like “I Blame the Bar,” “Nicotine,” “Love You Tonight,” and “Paint the Town Blue” similarly reference standard country motifs.

Langley changes things up with “You Look Like You Love Me,” a duet with Riley Green, using an almost spoken-word approach with a classic honky-tonk jukebox feel. This style works well and adds variety to the album. Overall, the blend of styles and sub-genres is effective.

Vocally, Langley has a warm and rounded voice with little inflection, reminiscent of Lainey Wilson. Her vocals are smooth with a slight twang, creating a dependable mid-register sound.
