Ginger Root is an American indie soul music project from Huntington Beach, California, led by singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Cameron Lew. The project’s musical sound has been described as “aggressive elevator soul”, and Lew draws inspiration from bands such as Vulfpeck, Toro y Moi, White Denim, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and Feist.
While in the studio, Ginger Root consists solely of Lew. However, when on tour, Ginger Root also includes Lew’s high school friends Matt Carney on drums and Dylan Hovis on bass.
The music of Ginger Root has been released under Acrophase Records, with the exception of the forthcoming album SHINBANGUMI, which will be released under Ghostly International.
Ginger Root will release the new album ‘Shinbangumi’ on September 13th. The artist has crafted a unique sound, described as a glossy, electronic pop daydream that recalls Japanese City Pop and its Western counterparts, labeled as “aggressive elevator soul”. Ginger Root has gained a dedicated following, even selling out London’s EartH venue.
The new album ‘Shinbangumi’ promises to be something special, marking Ginger Root‘s third album, showcasing a palpable sense of confidence.
The new single ‘No Problems’ was created without preconceptions and managed to capture exactly what Ginger Root should sound like. The track is described as cute, whimsical, and oddly affecting, representing Ginger Root‘s innate creativity. Cameron Lew adds: “In terms of instrumentation and musicality, it’s the first time that I felt very confident and comfortable with how everything should be comprised. On a more personal note, ‘SHINBANGUMI’ is a platform to showcase my new self.”
