Ice Spice posted four songs that made it to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2023 and won the title of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Year. She worked her way up the ranks in the rap industry, gaining recognition from artists like Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, receiving Grammy nominations, collaborating on a Super Bowl commercial with Starry, and even having her own drink at Dunkin’ Donuts, all before releasing her debut album.
At a time when hip-hop has struggled to find new hitmakers, Ice Spice and her amber curls arrived – The Bronx princess that was promised. Ice enjoyed a rapid rise to stardom from the local store to the Super Bowl – or “from the 4 Line to being nominated for a Grammy four times,” as she raps in the opening track “Phat Butt” on her album Y2K!
The 24-year-old became a new face for the drill movement in NYC. Expectations for her highly anticipated album Y2K! vary. Some view Ice as more of a singles artist, while others have set very high standards due to the strong start of her career.
Fully produced by her close collaborator RiotUSA, Y2K! was released last Friday (July 26) with appearances from Travis Scott, Gunna, and Central Cee, making a total of 10 tracks (with a bonus track released on Thursday). Four of these tracks had been previously released as singles.
A week after the release of Y2K!, Ice Spice is back with the bonus track “GYAT,” which was produced by Riot. The song is filled with self-references and features a blend of Western music and Jersey club flair. “Built like a Barbie, but act like a brat / You know I’m the baddest, like, keep it a stack,” sings Ice Spice in the song.
