ITZY‘s ”Ringo” Download MP3 Leak
ITZY have been releasing Japanese music for some time now, and they are set to release their first J-pop album next month.
Recently, they released the music video for the album’s promotional single, Ringo (which means “apple” in English). Fans of their K-pop sound will be pleased that Ringo feels like that sound transcoded onto Japan.
However, for me, Ringo doesn’t offer much that’s new. While the track is full of energy and verve, its messy arrangement causes it to stumble more often than it succeeds.
The contrast between the song’s more tentative verses and explosive chorus could work well, but it falls short due to the lack of engaging melody. The percussion changes add excitement, but the final product doesn’t quite stick.
ITZY has faced criticism for their vocals in the past, some of which is unfair. However, the concerns only seem to be cemented by the performance in Ringo. The chorus is pitched too high, and the strain in the vocals is noticeable.
There are ways to work around this issue, such as utilizing unison singing and vocal layering to create a rich texture, which J-pop idol groups have been doing for decades. It’s unclear why JYP, ITZY’s producer, avoids utilizing this technique.
In Ringo, the rawness of the performance adds to the song’s sense of chaotic sloppiness, making it a tough listen.
