Even though Jimin is taking a brief hiatus to serve his required military service in South Korea, the guy whose name has long provoked exuberant reactions from fans worldwide continues to be a beloved figure. The BTS member is ready to melt hearts again when he makes a comeback with his second solo album, “MUSE.”
Jimin made headlines as the first Korean solo artist to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with his single “Like Crazy” when he launched his solo career in March 2023 with “FACE.” This EP combined dramatic orchestrations with upbeat dancing to accentuate Jimin’s expressive vocals, providing a close-knit examination of his artistic development and emotional journey. According to performance director Minseong Kim, Jimin’s shows are “characterized by his rich expressions and his unwavering commitment to capturing the artistic spirit of his work.”
With its seven tracks exploring themes of love and self-discovery, “MUSE” keeps up this trend. The album tells a dramatic story of a journey from self-loss to self-discovery, reimagined romance, and fleeting confidence. Bright high notes dance over a steady heartbeat in “Rebirth (Intro),” which opens the album and captures the exhilaration of first love. Jimin’s words express his want for a close, meaningful connection with someone special, giving each action a purposeful, genuine tone.
The instrumental track “Interlude: Showtime” that follows provides a taste of Jimin‘s lively and rhythmic live style. This moves smoothly into the pre-release single “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band (feat. Loco),” whose exuberant and reflective aspects are blended in a music video that faintly echoes The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Jimin’s need for a connection is still present in “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band (feat. Loco),” and their vocals come together in a seductive, sensual duet in “Slow Dance (feat. Sofia Carson)”. The opening single “Who” conveys a heartfelt search for a soul mate, while “Be Mine” presents a self-assured Afrobeats rhythm with Jimin figuratively dancing under the moonlight.
“Closer Than This,” a poignant letter to his supporters that was released soon after his enlistment in December 2023, serves as the album’s closer. Jimin’s assurance of a prompt return strikes a strong chord with his listeners despite his absence. Even if “MUSE” doesn’t try to completely change its aesthetic, it recognizes how important it is to keep fans interested and satisfied. According to Minseong Kim, “Jimin’s versatility and dedication have crafted a unique style, making his performances some of the most thrilling in pop music today.” “MUSE” ensures that followers are enthralled and thrilled by celebrating joy and love, while “FACE” explores more melancholy issues.
