Joanna Sternberg‘s “Neighbors” Download MP3
Joanna Sternberg has released a brand new song titled “Neighbors” after their earlier release “I’ve Got Me”.
The song was recorded at their living room piano by Chris Miller. In a statement, Sternberg explained that the song is about their social anxiety and how it affects them when they interact with people in the high-rise building they live in.
They often feel unsure of social cues and rules, leading them to either shut down completely or act like an over-friendly almost muppet-like version of a human. The song is intended to be tongue-in-cheek and silly, inspired by Randy Newman.
The lyrics of the song perfectly capture the familiar awkwardness that arises whenever we run into a stranger who lives near us. Lines like “You don’t say hi to me, so I won’t say hi to you/ You won’t smile at me, so I won’t smile at you/ So, so, what’s next?” are relatable and catchy.
The song is accompanied by a jaunty piano tune that matches Sternberg’s unique voice. The wordless pseudo-scat section at the end of the song adds a wonderful touch. Why haven’t more people written songs about this real shit?
LYRICS
- So, so, what’s next in the scheme of things?
- I will never, though my heart, it stings
- And my paranoia’s chasing me
- Although we both must know
- That we are far too stubborn to ever let our feelings show
