Jordan Michael Houston III was born on April 5, 1975, in Memphis, Tennessee. As a teenager, he read a multitude of books and essays on the music industry, learning about marketing, publishing, and royalties. He looked up to fellow Tennessee artist Al Bell, who briefly co-owned Stax Records.

Houston wrote the lyrics for the 1999 Three 6 Mafia track “Slob on My Knob” in 11th grade at North Side High School.

Juicy J is known for his versatility. He has stayed true to his trippy style for most of his career, creating hard-hitting Memphis anthems whether he’s performing solo or with Three 6 Mafia. His new album, Ravenite Social Club, showcases a sophisticated and slick sound, evident from the opening track with its dramatic soul arrangements and sound effects. This is an expensive-sounding album, and Juicy J delivers equally strong performances behind the mic.

The second song, “The Higher Up’s,” starts off a little rough. The “corporate America” refrain falls short as a hook, and the rest of the song isn’t strong enough to overcome this initial flaw. Juicy J delves into social commentary elsewhere on Ravenite Social Club, with more success on tracks like “Don’t Go Out.” However, the standout moments are the ones that blend the retro aesthetic with Juicy J‘s melodic flows. “Everything All Good” and “Suicide Doors” stand out with their production and nimble wordplay, showcasing the rapper’s skill. The latter is further enhanced by a standout guest verse from Cordae. Ravenite Social Club could benefit from being a bit shorter, but overall, it stands as one of Juicy J‘s best solo releases.

About Artist:

Jordan Michael Houston III, known professionally as Juicy J, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer from Memphis, Tennessee. He is a founding member of the Southern hip hop group Three 6 Mafia, which gained mainstream recognition in 2000 with their signing to Loud Records, an imprint of Columbia Records. The group’s 2005 single, “Stay Fly”, reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and their song “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp” from the film Hustle & Flow won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Juicy J released his debut studio album, Chronicles of the Juice Man, in 2002, followed by Hustle Till I Die in 2009. During Three 6 Mafia’s hiatus in 2011, he pursued solo work and took on an executive role at Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang Entertainment. He signed as a solo act with Columbia and Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records in 2012. His third album, Stay Trippy (2013), featuring the hit single “Bandz a Make Her Dance”, peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. He also collaborated on successful singles such as “23” with Mike Will Made It, “I Don’t Mind” with Usher, “She Knows” with Ne-Yo, and “Dark Horse” with Katy Perry, which topped the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite the commercial failure of his fourth album, Rubba Band Business (2017), Juicy J returned to an independent career and released his fifth album, The Hustle Continues, in 2020.
