Little Simz, a British rapper, released her fourth studio album titled “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” on September 3rd, 2021, under the labels Age 101 Music and AWAL. This album follows Little Simz’s previous works, including the Mercury Prize-nominated album “Grey Area,” released in 2019, and the five-track EP “Drop 6”.
Since Carl Jung popularized the term “introvert” over a hundred years ago, there have been some common misconceptions about what it means. One of the most common is that introversion is the same as shyness or a lack of confidence. However, Jung’s more nuanced position was that introverts focus their energy inward, are thoughtful, and connected with their feelings. On the other hand, extroverts project their energy outwards, thriving on interaction and attention.
Little Simz raises whether she is Simz, the artist, or Simbi, the person. The question arises a few minutes into the album, hidden beneath the brassy drama of the masterful opener and lead single, “Introvert.” The album’s title, “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert,” can be shortened to an acronym SIMBI, Little Simz’s nickname among her friends. The question is relevant in today’s society where everyday validation is sought after. Little Simz’s question becomes more pressing, “Why the desperate need for an applause?” she asks on the track “Standing Ovation.” This question is relatable to anyone, not just a pop star.
Little Simz had already gained the admiration of two of her musical idols, Kendrick Lamar and Lauryn Hill, a few albums into her career. However, her third album, “REY Area,” which was introspective but musically adventurous, proved to be a watershed moment in her career. Little Simz’s profile shifted from being “acclaimed but underappreciated” to something more like a “national treasure in waiting.” She then landed a starring role in Netflix’s Top Boy reboot, countless cover shoots, and a grab bag of awards and nominations that have stationed her on the cusp of household-name status in the UK.
Despite her confidence in her abilities, as she said in a recent interview with the London Evening Standard, “Honestly, respectfully, I think I’m very, very talented,” Little Simz has watched the gulf between Simz and Simbi widen as acclaim rolls in. The lyrics of “Standing Ovation” reflect this struggle, “Don’t be so obsessed with me you think you know what’s best for me,” before slipping into her Jungian analysis, “Take my energy, come to find there’s nothing left of me.”
Little Simz is caught in a bind because writing is how she figures out what she thinks and who she is, “I bottle up and then spill it in verses,” goes “Introvert.” However, the more prominent she becomes, the more people will be privy to her inner tussles. What happens when the dream comes true, and the world listens in while she confronts her “daddy issues”?
