The self-professed “bedroom writer/producer” and multi-instrumentalist Pixey, also known as Elizabeth Hillesdon, is a 29-year-old from Lancashire. She has a talent for creating catchy tunes, which has resulted in the release of three EPs in the past five years and has garnered her numerous “one to watch” accolades.
Despite her cheerful and infectious musical style, Pixey’s journey into music began after a challenging period. As a student, she was hospitalized with a brain haemorrhage. Following her recovery, she decided to pursue creating music. She started by downloading a trial version of Ableton music software and teaching herself to play guitar. In 2020, she signed with the prestigious independent label Chess Club Records, which counts acts like Jungle and Wolf Alice among its alumni.
While Pixey did release a “mini-album” titled “Dreams, Pains & Paper Planes” in 2022, “Million Dollar Baby” is being promoted as her debut studio album. This album showcases a blend of 1990s/2000s indie-rave influences, which will resonate with existing fans and has the potential to attract new listeners. The opening track, “Man Power,” combines Pixey’s captivating vocals with a Britpop swagger, a big-beat rhythm, and a crunchy guitar sample evoking The Chemical Brothers’ hit “Block Rockin’ Beats.”
The album’s title track, “Million Dollar Baby,” is characterized by its instantly memorable melody, reminiscent of Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen. As Pixey sings, “We only live for fame/But I don’t think it was made for me,” her sound exudes confidence while carrying an intriguing hint of wistfulness.
The album offers a mix of crowd-rousing energy and nostalgic trippiness. From the dreamy and uplifting “Best Friend” (“My days feel better with you”) to the lively dancefloor groove of “Bring Back The Beat” featuring co-producer Tom McFarland of Jungle, each song brings something unique. The moody strings in the closing track, “The War In My Mind,” evoke memories of The Verve’s influential “Bittersweet Symphony.”
In other parts of the album, “Oxygen” hints at a sense of determined independence. Pixey’s indie-pop mix has always been easy on the ears, but it seems she’s now truly finding her own voice.

About Artist:
Elizabeth Sinead Hillesdon was born on 12 March 1995 in Ormskirk, West Lancashire and grew up in Parbold, attending school in Liverpool. Although surrounded by the music of Kate Bush and Björk as she was growing up, Pixey did not begin to play music herself until she recovered from a life-threatening viral infection at the age of twenty. After teaching herself guitar and learning how to produce using Ableton Live, she started making music with a DIY approach inspired by Mac DeMarco.
Pixey self-released “Hometown” and “Young” on Spotify in 2016, and “Young” gained attention from BBC Radio 1 and received regular airplay. She collaborated with musicians from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and performed regularly at local Liverpool venues such as the Jacaranda.
