Sumerian Records describes Zig as an album that takes listeners on an unpredictable journey, oscillating between “unfettered and vulnerable” to “double speed, fuzzed-up, distorted screaming.” Poppy’s singles released thus far embody the essence of dark pop, showcasing the artist’s musical evolution.

Poppy signed with Sumerian Records in 2020 and released her third studio album; I’m afraid I have to disagree. The album featured a blend of heavy metal and industrial rock and showcased a continuation of the stylistic shift that began with her second album. Some critics described the lyrical themes and music videos as “disturbing,” “violent,” and “macabre.” In 2021, Poppy released her fourth studio album, Flux, which critics highly praised. The album had a less harsh and stripped-down sound than her previous works and saw Poppy experimenting with alternative rock.

The same year, Poppy’s song “Bloodmoney” was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. She also collaborated with WWE and its NXT brand, releasing the metalcore EP Eat (NXT Soundtrack). Poppy’s fifth studio album, Zig, promises to be an experimental and magical journey, taking her fans to a new level.
