Double Grammy-winning jazz singer Samara Joy is set to release a festive EP titled “A Joyful Holiday” on October 27. The six-song EP is an extension of her latest album, “Linger Awhile”.
The EP features a new recording of Stevie Wonder’s “Twinkle Twinkle Little Me,” both studio and live versions of “The Christmas Song,” and previously released tracks such as “O Holy Night,” “Warm in December,” and her swinging understanding of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” which is available now.
Produced by Matt Pierson, the upcoming release features a similar cast of jazz A-listers to those on “Linger Awhile,” with Pasquale Grasso on guitar, David Wong on bass, Kenny Washington on drums, and Sullivan Fortner on piano. The EP will be available as an exclusive D2C emerald green color variant LP.
On November 17, the Verve Vinyl Collection will also be released, featuring Joy’s three Verve releases, “Linger Awhile,” “Linger Awhile Longer,” and “A Joyful Holiday.”
Earlier this year, Joy won two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album, and “Linger Awhile” reached No.1 on Amazon Best Sellers, Billboard Jazz, Pandora Trendsetters, iTunes, and Amazon’s digital music and CD sales. The artist has over one million followers on social media, and her tour dates have sold out at home and internationally.
Joy has toured worldwide for the rest of the year, with stops in Athens, Berlin, Paris, London, and more. The “A Joyful Holiday” tour, featuring members of her McLendon family, starts on December 1 in Houston and takes in shows in Nashville, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and two hometown shows at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Samara Joy McLendon (born November 11, 1999) is an American jazz singer who won a Grammy Award. She released her first album, Samara Joy, in 2021, which earned her the Best New Artist title by JazzTimes. In September 2022, she released her second album, Linger Awhile, which won her the Best Jazz Vocal Album award and the Best New Artist title at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
Joy was born into a musical family in the Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. Her paternal grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, founded the gospel group The Savettes. At the same time, her father, a touring musician with Andraé Crouch, introduced her to gospel legends like The Clark Sisters and soul and Motown music. She attended Fordham High School for the Arts, where she performed in the jazz band and won Best Vocalist at the Essentially Ellington festival, a high school competition hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Joy discovered a passion for jazz while studying voice at SUNY’s Purchase College, where she was named an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. She learned about the great jazz vocalists such as Sarah Vaughan and Fitzgerald and instrumentalists like Kenny Washington, Jon Faddis (with whom she studied), and Ingrid Jensen.
