Samara Joy McLendon, born on November 11, 1999, is a highly talented American jazz singer who has gained recognition in the music industry. She released her first album, “Samara Joy,” in 2021, and was awarded the title of Best New Artist by JazzTimes. Her second album, “Linger Awhile,” which came out in 2022, reached the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. At the 2023 Grammy Awards, Joy won awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artist, and her single “Tight” won Best Jazz Performance.
Joy‘s journey in jazz began when she joined the jazz program at SUNY’s Purchase College as a voice major, and she was honored as an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. During her studies, she was inspired by legendary jazz vocalists like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as instrumentalists like Kenny Washington and Jon Faddis.
The three-time Grammy-winning artist is excited to announce her new studio album, “Portrait,” which will be released on Verve Records on October 11. The album reflects Joy’s musical growth as she takes on the roles of songwriter, arranger, and bandleader. Co-produced with the renowned trumpeter Brian Lynch, “Portrait” includes eight songs that showcase the synergy with her touring band, an octet comprising talented musicians across various instruments.
Recorded in the famous Van Gelder Studio, “Portrait” captures Joy‘s lyrical prowess and fresh arrangements of classic jazz tunes. The album embodies inspiration from diverse musical backgrounds and emphasizes the collaborative spirit of her band, highlighting their unique project. After a year of development on the road, she is honored to share this new album with the world.
