Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr., better known as Skepta, is a British grime MC, rapper, producer, and DJ, born on September 19, 1982. He’s been a central figure in the grime scene for years, alongside his younger brother, Jme. Before they founded the legendary collective “Boy Better Know” in 2005, Skepta was briefly part of “Roll Deep.” One of the most memorable moments in his early career was his clash with Devilman on “Lord of the Mics 2.” which still stands as one of the most iconic clashes in grime history.
Skepta has released several albums over the years. His debut, “Greatest Hits,” came out in 2007, followed by “Microphone Champion” in 2009. Both albums were released independently, showcasing Skepta’s DIY spirit. His third album, “Doin’ It Again,” released in 2011, was his first to drop under a label (AATW). Skepta also dipped into acting, making his film debut in 2015 with “Anti-Social.” However, it was his 2016 album “Konnichiwa” that really made waves globally, especially with hits like “That’s Not Me” and “Shutdown.” *Konnichiwa* even went on to win the prestigious Mercury Prize.
Now, fans have eagerly awaited Skepta’s new album, “Knife and Fork,” which was supposed to drop earlier this year but hasn’t been released yet. So far, he’s given us singles like “Gas Me Up (Diligent)” and “Tony Montana,” and more recently, he teamed up with Alabama rapper Flo Milli for the track “Why Lie?”. This song marks a bit of a departure from Skepta’s usual grime sound, opting for a more melodic, Auto-Tune vibe, with Flo Milli adding her signature energy. If you’re a fan of Skepta’s versatility, this might be the perfect track to check out.
While we wait for the full album, it’s worth diving into these singles to get a taste of what’s to come. Fans of both grime and more mainstream hip-hop are bound to enjoy what Skepta has up his sleeve next!
