The Dare has announced the release of his debut album “What’s Wrong With New York?” The album, featuring a collection of dance-punk songs, is set to be released on September 6 under Republic Records. A new single titled “Perfume” has been released alongside a black-and-white music video directed by Nick Harwood.
To coincide with the album release, The Dare will kick off his first headlining tour in North America this fall. The tour starts on September 5 at New York’s Webster Hall and includes dates in Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and more.
“What’s Wrong With New York?” was recorded over the past year in The Dare’s home and studio in New York. The album includes two songs, “Good Time” and “Girls,” from 2023’s The Sex EP. Collaborators on the album include Dylan Brady (100 gecs), Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, FKA twigs, Dua Lipa), Romil Hemnani (Brockhampton), Chris Greatti (Yves Tumor, Yeule), Isaac Eiger of Strange Ranger, and others.
The Dare, the solo project of vocalist, songwriter, and producer Harrison Patrick Smith, gained recognition with the release of “Girls” in 2022, named the fifth-best song of 2022 by The New York Times. The Dare is also known for raucous live shows, DJ sets, and hosting the downtown Manhattan party Freakquencies.

Additionally, he produced the track “Guess” on the Brat deluxe edition. In May, The Dare performed at various sold-out U.K. and Europe dates and at festivals including Primavera and Great Escape.

About Artist:
Harrison Patrick Smith, born in 1996 and known professionally as The Dare (formerly Turtlenecked), is an American singer and musician. He first grabbed attention with his single “Girls,” which came out in August 2022. He also helped produce Charli XCX’s song “Guess” from her 2024 deluxe album Brat. After making indie music as Turtlenecked in the Pacific Northwest, Smith moved to New York City and started creating songs under the name The Dare. He released the singles “Girls” and “Good Time,” and signed with Republic Records. On May 19, 2023, he put out The Sex EP, which got mixed reviews. The Dare is linked to the indie sleaze revival and Dimes Square scene.
During the pandemic, Smith made some “goofy” songs to share with his friends. One night, inspired by the Rolling Stones’ album Some Girls, he came up with “Girls,” his first single as The Dare. He played it at Turtlenecked shows and saw the crowd enjoying it, even though it was a bit more energetic and lighthearted compared to his usual indie style. He officially released the song in August 2022, describing it as a break from the overly serious music of the past five years. Jon Caramanica from The New York Times even named “Girls” one of the top songs of 2022, calling it “epically silly and epically debauched.”
