The Residents are an American art collective and rock band renowned for their avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, “Meet the Residents” (1974), they have published over 60 albums, numerous music videos, short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs spanning over half a century. They have conducted seven major world tours and composed soundtracks for multiple films. As pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, the Residents have received several awards for their multimedia projects. They also founded Ralph Records, a record label that focuses on avant-garde music, in 1972.
Throughout their existence, the individual members of the band have often worked anonymously, preferring to keep the attention on their art. This aspect of the group has generated much speculation and rumor. In public, they typically appear silent and in costume, frequently donning eyeball helmets, top hats, and tails—elements that have become their signature iconography. In 2017, Hardy Fox, who was long associated with the Residents, identified himself as the band’s co-founder and primary composer; he passed away in 2018.
The Residents‘ upcoming album, “Dookietown,” offers a fresh, experimental perspective with a hint of nostalgia, revisiting themes first explored by the band in the 1990s. Set to be released on November 1, 2024, the album coincides with the U.S. election season and poses the whimsical question, “Where do clowns go when the show is over?” It features six tracks divided into two sides: the A-side includes “Duck Sauce,” “Dookietown,” and “The Crying Clown,” while the B-side contains “Pujo’s Revenge,” “Clown Car,” and “Dead Already.”
This project was created quickly, inspired by an older concept that the band revisited during a break from working on another upcoming album. “Dookietown” embraces the band’s signature surreal and cryptic style, complemented by eye-catching “porno/graphix” artwork on the 10” vinyl EP. The album also features liner notes from Homer Flynn, offering insights into the album’s origins and the band’s vision.
