The Rolling Stones have announced the release of their first album of original material in 18 years. The album, titled “Hackney Diamonds”, features high-profile guests.
Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder are two of the guests who feature on the album. They come together on the Stones’ new single called “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven”.
The song is a slow-burn gospel-inflected ballad, with Lady Gaga’s howling contributions being more obvious to the naked ear. Stevie Wonder plays Fender Rhodes, Moog, and piano on the song.
On Thursday, the band released “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” as the second single from the upcoming album. The song features bluesy, gospel-tinged vocals from Gaga, with Wonder taking the whole group to church on the keyboard. The singers trade vocals through the song, with Mick Jagger crooning about hearing the sounds of heaven drifting down to meet him on earth and Gaga providing soaring riffs behind him, all amidst a lush, powerful arrangement of guitars, saxophone, and drums.
Ronnie Wood, a member of the Stones, previously praised Gaga’s vocals as “really sweet” in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that confirmed the project was in the works. Wood said in a separate Sky News interview at the event that they were recording separate projects in the same area and decided to team up for the Hackney Diamonds session. Gaga, who is very talented, was sitting on the floor in the studio, and Mick asked her to record her humming. She then got up and recorded her vocals for the song.
