Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson was born on July 27, 1992, in Brampton, Ontario. His father, Sonstar, is from Barbados, and his mother, Luella, is from Curaçao. The family lived in Montreal before moving to Miami, Florida. After his mother passed away, his father became an ordained minister and missionary, leading to frequent relocations across the United States. Following his father’s remarriage, the family settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where Daystar, known as Tory Lanez, befriended Hakeem, who was working as a janitor at the time. Hakeem nicknamed him “Lanez” due to his thrill-seeking nature, often playing in the streets without paying attention to traffic.
In 2006, due to behavioral issues, he was sent to live with his cousins Dahir Abib and Orane Forrest in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Subsequently, he moved to Toronto to live with his grandmother, but she declined to care for him, leaving him to fend for himself at the age of 15. Reflecting on this period, Lanez mentioned, “I ended up moving downtown with these three dudes that I didn’t really know. I came into the house and I didn’t realize how things worked. From like fifteen to eighteen, I was just fighting them. It was every man for himself. That’s what made me a man, having to fend for myself and being in a situation where there is no dad, no grandma, and no mom to help you. It changed the person that I am today.”
Lanez rediscovered his passion for rapping and named himself “Notorious” in honor of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G., whom he admired. He eventually adopted the moniker “Tory Lanez.” At 16, Lanez dropped out of the tenth grade and began performing at outdoor concerts. A year later, he developed an interest in singing, despite having no formal vocal training.
