W.H. Lung is an intriguing British band that got its start in 2017. The group initially featured vocalist Joe Evans and guitarist Tom Sharkett, both of whom had rich backgrounds in different musical projects. Hailing from the dynamic music scenes of Leeds and Manchester, they quickly captured attention with their debut single, “Inspiration!/Nothing Is.” This was followed by their celebrated 2019 album, Incidental Music, which showcased their distinctive sound, influenced by a mix of indie rock, krautrock, and art-pop.
Their songwriting process is quite collaborative. Living and working closely together, Evans and Sharkett create a cozy environment for creativity. They often begin with initial song ideas and then layer them into expansive compositions, with many tracks exceeding five minutes. After the pandemic, the band expanded to a five-piece by welcoming bassist Chris Mulligan, keyboardist Hannah Peace, and drummer Alex Mercer-Main, which allowed them to further develop their sound.
Their second album, Vanities, reflects their evolution and willingness to experiment, building upon what they established in their debut. Working with producer Matt Peel, they refined their musical style to create something that feels authentic and relatable. W.H. Lung is not only recognized for their studio work but also for their electrifying live performances, which feature intricate musical arrangements paired with a captivating stage presence.
Exciting news for fans: W.H. Lung has announced a new album titled Every Inch of Earth Pulsates, set to be released on October 18 through Melodic. The lead single, “How to Walk,” is available for a sneak peek, and you can check out the album cover and tracklist as well. For this new project, the band teamed up with producer Ross Orton, known for his work with MIA and Arctic Monkeys. According to Evans, Orton has a unique ability to keep the recording process relaxed and creative, helping them avoid overthinking their music. Guitarist Sharkett praised Orton’s bombastic and lively production style, which truly brought a touch of magic to their songs.
