Wilco‘s “Cousin” Album Download Leak MP3 ZIP Files
Cousin is the 13th studio album by Wilco, released on September 29, 2023, via dBpm Records.
Wilco is one of my favorite musical artists of all time, ranking in my top five. Their album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, forever changed the way I hear music.
I’ve seen them in concert more times than any other band, probably pushing 20 concerts at this point. (Yes, I am a 40-year-old Midwestern dad, why do you ask?) So, whenever they release a new album, I make it a point to share my thoughts. Recently, they released their new LP, Cousin. Though I intended to write a proper review of the album, I found myself unable to do so. Instead, I offer this Undercooked Assessment.
The headline with Cousin is the involvement of Welsh art-pop great Cate Le Bon, the first outside producer to work on a Wilco album since Jim O’Rourke worked his magic on A Ghost Is Born 19 years ago. Though Tom Schick, the house engineer at the Wilco Loft, doesn’t count, being more like George Martin or Nigel Godrich, basically part of the band. Many people claim that Le Bon has helped Jeff Tweedy and friends get closer to the sound and feeling of “old Wilco,” but that’s wishful thinking. It also undersells the quality of the last couple Wilco records.
Cousin is an immensely rewarding album, as were Cruel Country and Ode To Joy. The new songs feature some brilliant and surprising production flourishes, and Jeff Tweedy’s lyrical game keeps getting better the older he gets. Lead single “Evicted” sounds a bit like “Kamera.” However, the dreary cloud that has been hovering over everything they’ve released since Schmilco continues to linger. In fact, the feeling of a gathering cloud is one of the consistent sonic motifs throughout the record.
Tweedy still isn’t pushing his weathered voice anywhere near “I’D LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL FOR NOTHING!” range. Wilco sounds creatively energized, but it’s not like they’ve once again become a band that explodes from the speakers. It’s thoughtful music that’s chill. I’m grateful this record exists, but we don’t need to pretend it’s in the same league as Summerteeth or anything like that. If you enjoy this album, I suggest you go back to the last two and try again.
Wilco is an alternative rock band from Chicago, formed in 1994 by members of Uncle Tupelo after Jay Farrar’s departure. Today is all about Cousin, though. Stream the album below, and sound off with your own perspectives in the comments.
