After 12 years since WINTERSUN‘s “Time I,” the Finnish heavy metal quartet led by Jari Mäenpää has announced its new album, “Time II,” which will be released on August 30 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Mäenpää describes “Time II” as an epic journey from light to darkness and back to light, exploring the universe and energy. The album includes songs with fast-paced drums, guitars, and bass, as well as slower, melodic tracks with exotic influences. It also features massive orchestrations, choirs, ancient world instruments, and synths. The album showcases Jari’s soaring, clean singing contrasted with his aggressive style. “Time II” is a highly detailed and complex album that reveals new things with every listen.

The long-awaited “Time II,” consisting of six epic tracks with interconnected stories, will be revealed to the world next month. Mäenpää has been working on his expansive “Time” project since early 2004. The album’s overarching conceptual feeling is highlighted by its individual yet linked tracks. The album begins with the eastern-influenced atmospheric intro “Fields Of Snow,” followed by the metallic brilliance of “The Way Of The Fire,” representing the energy of stars as a source of life connected to time. “One With The Shadows” features vocal harmonies and ornate orchestral arrangements, conveying a message about regret. The interlude “Ominous Clouds” leads to the next adventure, “Storm.”

About Artist:

Former folk metal band Ensiferum’s guitarist and singer Jari Mäenpää started a side project called Wintersun, a heavy metal band based in Helsinki, Finland.

Mäenpää started compiling tracks he had been working on since 1995 in 2003. These songs had a certain theme that Mäenpää defined as melodious, majesty, and “spacy.” For the first album, Mäenpää intended to play and record every instrument himself, but he still needed a drummer. Kai Hahto, a former Rotten Sound member, accepted to play the drums when he submitted him demos.

After signing a record deal, Mäenpää planned the first album’s recording sessions. Because Mäenpää’s request for time off from the band coincided with Ensiferum’s 2004 release tour, the band had to grant it. Rather than working with him, the band let him go, allowing Mäenpää to continue working on his self-titled album, Wintersun.

Following the release of Wintersun, the band recruited permanent members to play live and promote the record; but, because of the increasingly intricate and expansive orchestrations and synth sections on the new music Mäenpää was producing at the time, a keyboardist would never be found. Wintersun’s second and third albums, Time I and Time II, were supposed to be released as a single album when they started recording them in 2006. May of that year saw the start of recording, but the albums would face years of delays due to several factors, not the least of which being the intricate mix of each song.
