Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known as Wizkid, was born on 16 July 1990 in Ojuelegba, Surulere, Lagos. He grew up in a household with twelve female siblings, raised by a Pentecostal Christian mother and a father who practiced Islam. Wizkid attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School and was influenced by the music of artists such as King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley.
In various interviews, Wizkid mentioned that his father had three wives and that he formed a music group called the Glorious Five with friends from church, releasing an album before the group disbanded. He initially used the stage name Lil Prinz before meeting record producer OJB Jezreel, who delayed his recording for a year. During this time, Wizkid observed artists like 2 Face Idibia and Sound Sultan in the studio and received mentorship from Naeto C.
Wizkid signed with Empire Mates Entertainment in 2009 and worked with artists such as Banky W., Naeto C, Ikechukwu, and M.I to develop his craft. He also briefly attended Lagos State University and later Lead City University before dropping out.
Wizkid has hinted at a new album, “Morayo,” which holds special significance as a tribute to his late mother, who passed away in 2023. He recently released a snippet of a song titled “Piece of My Heart,” featuring American singer-songwriter Brent Faiyaz. Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the full album, especially after Wizkid’s recent high-profile features and collaborations.
